Chief minister Tarun Gogoi launched twin attacks on BJP and
the minority-dominated All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), led by
perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal, saying he would not rule out the possibility of
the state's biggest opposition party having links with BJP. Gogoi referred to
the BJP-PDP alliance in Jammu & Kashmir to substantiate his comment.
"Ajmal and BJP maintain close links. Both BJP and AIUDF
are communal parties and we oppose them. Assam is a land of diverse religions
and communities. We will not allow our pluralistic society to be
destroyed," Gogoi said on Monday. "I will not be surprised if BJP and
AIUDF join hands. The former has done it in Jammu & Kashmir. It (BJP) may do
it in Assam with AIUDF. Where was BJP's ideology when it joined with PDP?"
he asked.
The chief minister said the increasing presence of RSS and
Bajrang Dal in the state was alarming.
However, AIUDF however, denied Gogoi's allegation and said
it staunchly opposed communalism and communal forces. Party leaders said Gogoi
and Congress were misleading people by spreading canards about AIUDF and BJP
teaming up.
