Good news for the cranberry juice lovers! If you
just love cranberries and the cranberry cocktail, then you are perhaps the one
who will be spared from the reach of deadly diseases like heart disease,
diabetes and stroke etc. Cranberry has great nutritional value and this has
been accepted and claimed by the health experts since long. Now the researchers
too have come up with the positive effects of the juicy tangy fruit.
As stated by the World Health Organisation,
about 15.6 million lives around the globe are claimed by these three lethal
diseases every year and if you have got to know the secret to keep these diseases
at bay then what should you wait for? As cranberries are rich in the protective
compounds, called polyphenols, consuming cranberries, either as the fruit or in
the form of juice will support the natural defences of the body and help in
achieving a balanced lifestyle to improve health.
Researchers from the United States Department
of Agriculture (USDA) found and proved the nutritional value of cranberries by providing
eight weeks' worth of meals to 56 healthy adult volunteers. One group of the
participants drank a glass of low-calorie cranberry juice twice daily and the
other group drank a placebo beverage with a similar colour and flavour. It was
found that the former group improved across all these measures and could show a
10 percent lower risk of heart disease and a 15 percent lower risk of stroke.
Christina Khoo, director of Research Sciences
at Ocean Spray, said, "At the start and end of the experiment, the
researchers measured things like blood pressure, blood sugar levels, blood
lipids, as well as C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation. These findings
suggest that polyphenols help to protect our bodies, and may be adept at
keeping a large number of ailments at bay."
The Journal of Nutrition published this study and its details.
