The Indo-Romanian pair of men’s doubles, seventh-seeded
Bopanna- Florin Mergea pair has made it to the semi-finals defeating their
opponents, the top seeded Mike and Bob Bryan and with this sensational win over
the favourites, the Indo-Romanian pair has kept the hope for the men’s doubles
trophy pretty strong and bright.
Bopanna-Mergea pair secured 7-5 4-6 6-7 (9-11)
6-7 5-7 win over the most successful men's doubles pair ever with 16 Grand Slam
titles, Bob and Mike Bryan. Notably, the Bryan pair had also won three
Wimbledon crowns out of the 16 Grand Slams and this sudden defeat in the
quarterfinals has certainly left the pair feeling shattered and shocked. The
Bopanna-Mergea will now face fourth-seeds Jean-Julien Rojer of Netherlands and
Horia Tecau of Romania.
On the other hand, another Indian tennis stars,
Leander Paes and Sania Mirza has moved into the quarter-finals with their respective
partners. Sania is paired with Bruno Soares and defeated M. Draganja and A.
Konjuh. Paes is paired with Martina Hingis and claimed victory over Artem Sitak
and Anastasia Rodionova.
In Women’s singles, Serena Williams made her
opponent Victoria Azarenka with a three-set win. Serena secured a 3-6 6-2 6-3
win in the quarter final match. At the same time, Russian fourth seed Maria
Sharapova defeated Coco Vandeweghe in 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 sets. With this win of
Sharapova, it is certain now that Serena and Sharapova are coming vis-a-vis.
Serena expressed her quarterfinal experience by
saying, "It was really fun out there. I was smiling at one point and I saw
Victoria smiling as well. We both really enjoyed it. It's been up and down, up
and down, but somehow I'm still alive. I'm just happy to be here."
Another pair to face each other in the semi-finals
is Agnieszka Radwanska and Garbine Muguruza.
